Charles Fitts

Charles Fitts was awarded first prize for his symphonic poem Cobá, in the 2003 composition competition sponsored by the Foundation Orchestra of Reno, Nevada. In addition to a cash prize of $1,000, the orchestra premiered and recorded the nine-minute work at its annual awards concert on October 13, 2003, under the direction of Gary Robert Buchanan, the orchestra's Founder and Artistic Director. Cobá is evocative of the partially excavated pyramid Nohoch Mul in the complex of Mayan ruins at Cobá, Mexico.

Premieres

The world premiere of Hearts Celestial for soprano and strings, was performed June 5, 2003, in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, by the Orchestra of the Swan conducted by Artistic Director David Curtis.

Performances

A silver medal was awarded to the Choir of the National Arts Center of Mexico City for its performance of Sanctus Sestina for Choir and Woodwind Quintet at the 2002 International Choir Olympics in Korea. The work was previously premiered by the choir at the National Arts Center in Mexico City in August, 2002.
