Dennis Kam

Dennis Kam is President-Elect for the Southern Chapter of The College Music Society. A lecture on Seeing Frankenthaler, for flute, bassoon, and harp at MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) was given on June 1, 2003. The work, commissioned by the Jacksonville (FL) Museum of Contemporary Art and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra in 2000, is based on Helen Frankenthaler's abstract expressionist painting "Gateway" (1988).

Premieres

The CMS Southern Chapter Meeting held at the University of South Florida on February 27, 2003, saw the premiere of Everyone Should Confess that Jesus Is Lord, (text Philippians 2:5-11) by soprano Amanda Young Cox, accompanied by the composer. A Very Valentine (text by Gertrude Stein) was also performed by Cox. Kam was a featured composer March 28 at the Parkside Series for the Arts, Letters & Music ("Inside the Mind of a Composer"), Parkside Church, Cleveland, OH, when pianist Amy Tarantino and members of the Cleveland Orchestra premiered his Sonata for piano and string quartet, which was commissioned for the event. Other works performed on the same program were String Quartet No. 3, Lokahi (transcribed for violin, cello, and piano), and Simply (arranged for 2 pianos).

Performances

Music for Celebration was performed by the South Florida Youth Symphony on a concert at the FMEA convention on January 10, 2003, in Tampa, FL. Fantasy Variations for flute and piano was presented by flutist Terri Mitchell on a concert featuring Florida composers January 31 at the Florida Flute Fair in Altamonte Springs, FL.
