Daniel McCarthy

Daniel McCarthy continues as Chair of the Composition and Theory Section, as well as Director of the American New Arts Festival, at the University of Akron (OH) School of Music. He is conductor of the Interlochen Festival Orchestra and instructor of Composition, Computer Music, and Theory at the Interlochen (MI) Arts Camp. He joined the conducting staff of the Cleveland (OH) Chamber Symphony for the 2003-2004 season. McCarthy received an Ohio Arts Council Fellowship in Composition for the year 2003 and was nominated for the Gravemeyer Award and the Pulitzer Prize by John Whitwell, conductor of the Michigan State University Bands, for Chamber Symphony No. 2 for Bassoon and Winds. Premieres

Clarinetist Kristina Belisle and the Cleveland (OH) Chamber Symphony, under the direction of Jason Weinberger, introduced Chamber Symphony No. 3 for Clarinet on March 3, 2003. Visions in Funk was performed by the Harrington String Quartet, March 12, in Amarillo, TX. Michael Kaufman led The Grand Ledge (MI) Symphonic Winds in a May 15 performance of In Love's Autumn. Visions and Apparitions for percussion and flute was presented on a July 9 Faculty Chamber Series concert by Keith Aleo and Nancy Stagnitta, Interlochen (MI) Center for the Arts. On a July 22 Interlochen Faculty Chamber Series concert, Testament (To Daniel, My Son) was performed by violist Daniel McCarthy II and pianist Susan Snyder; You, Who Sang In Summer was performed by the Quorum Ensemble on the same concert.

Performances

Chamber Symphony No. 2 for Bassoon and Winds received several performances: March 25, 2003, Louisiana State University Wind Ensemble conducted by Frank B. Wickes; April 25, University of North Texas Wind Symphony, conducted by Eugene Corporon; and October 16, Arizona State University Wind Symphony (Jeffrey Lyman, bassoon; Wayne Bailey, conductor). American Dance Music was heard in concert March 30 on the Guzzetta Hall Concert Series, Akron, OH, as performed by the Paragon Brass Quintet. The American New Arts Festival, Akron, OH, presented the works Comets in Winter Sky and Grand Ledges: Vistas In Michigan, in April 11 performances by the University of Akron Concert Band, under the direction of Galen Karriker. War is Kind was heard in performance October 30 by the Michigan State University Wind Symphony and Chorus, under the direction of Wesley J. Broadnax.
