The 2004 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 96, Number 2 Greg A. SteinkeGreg A. Steinke continues to reside in Green Valley, AZ, from October to May, and the rest of the year in Tierra del Mar, OR. He performs frequently as first oboist and soloist with various ensembles. Steinke received Honorable Mentions in the 2003 Britten-On-The-Bay Competition Series XIII (Saxophone Quartet) for Sacajawea - In Memoriam; and the USA International Harp Composition Competition, for the solo harp piece Tomorrow on Yesterday; his ASCAP Standard Award was renewed for 2003-04. The following new works will premiere in 2004: Van Gogh Vignettes (Image Music XXII) for flute duet; Expressions II on Paintings of Wassily Kandinsky (Image Music XXIII) for two saxophones, piano, and two percussion; Moments II from Native American Notes (Image Music VIa) for String Orchestra; and chamber version of Music for Bassoon and Orchestra. New commissions include a new work for the Danish Guitar Quartet for 2004, and another commission from Row Twelve Contemporary Music Ensemble of Boston for 2004. PremiereLet Us Take What We Can For the Occasion (Lawson Inada) for flute/piccolo, reciter, bass, and piano, was introduced by the Row Twelve Contemporary Music Ensemble, on December 7, 2002, in Boston, MA and on December 8, in Cambridge, MA. Sacajawea - In Memoriam, in a version for flute quartet, was first heard at the Triennial Delta Omicron National Conference, performed by Ann Droste, Jean Hutchinson, Dr. W. Sue Swilley, and Michelle Worthing, July 26, 2003. Beijing Impressions: A Travel Triptych (Image Music XVI) was introduced October 25-26 by the Catalina Chamber Orchestra conducted by Enrique Lasansky, in Tucson, AZ. PerformancesMusic for Chief Joseph, for oboe and four trombones, was performed by the composer and local guest artists on January 16, 2003, at the Sixth Annual American Music Week in Sofia, Bulgaria. Memories I of Chief Joseph, in a version for bassoon and marimba, was presented in Norway by students of Robert Roenes, Spring 2003. The Third Annual Symposium of World Music: Roots and Branches, featured a performance of Northwest Sketches II for flute, oboe and piano, as performed by Michael Stoune, the composer, and Jason Sifford, at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX, March 12-13; Steinke also made a presentation titled "Mother Earth: A Native American View," on a work in progress utilizing Native American poetry and music. Sacajawea - In Memoriam, version for saxophone quartet, was presented by the Vesuvius Saxophone Quartet in Tiffin, OH, at the 15th Annual New Music Festival, Heidelberg College, April 11-13.
