The 2004 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 96, Number 2 Howard J. BussHoward J. Buss' more than 100 published works include instrumental and vocal solos, symphonic, choral, and band compositions, and chamber music. His works have been performed by faculty artists at major universities as well as by players from prestigious organizations such as the New York Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, Toronto Symphony, Chicago Symphony, and the United States Air Force Band. During 2003 Howard Buss received an ASCAP Award for significant performances of his music in noncommercial media. Dr. Buss is founder and editor of Brixton Publications (ASCAP) and Howard J. Buss Publications (BMI), which publish accessible contemporary American music in the tradition of Gershwin, Copland, and Bernstein. E-mail: hbuss@brixtonpublications.com PremieresPrelude and Dance for solo flute, solo alto flute, and flute ensemble, was first heard January 30, 2003, with Nora Lee Garcia and Mary Karen Clardy; and with Diane Boyd, Lee Latimore, Brian Luce, and Andrea Redcay at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. The same ensemble also performed this composition February 1 at the Florida Flute Convention in Altamonte Springs. Skylines for trumpet and piano was presented May 22 by Eric Berlin and Nikki Stoia at the International Trumpet Guild Conference hosted by Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. The OSA Quartet de Percussio introduced Overture for Percussion on June 12, at the Aula de Cultura CAM in Alcoi, Spain. Legacy of Ancient Seas, for clarinet and piano, was performed July 10 by John Masserini and Kori Bond, at the International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFest, University of Utah in Salt Lake City. PerformancesMysterious Exit for flute and percussion ensemble was performed February 9, 2003, by Rafael Casasempere and the OSA Quartet de Percussio conducted by Jordi Bernacer at the Centre de Cultura, Valencia, Spain; and on March 14, at the Universidad de Murcia in Spain. Pieces heard in April include Camel Music, performed April 6 by trombonist Peter Vivona, Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff; American Phoenix, performed April 16 by Brian Brink, bass trombone, and the Florida Southern College Percussion Ensemble, Branscomb Auditorium, Lakeland, FL; and Modern Times, performed April 13 by Jose Mira, flute, Joan Gadea, narrator, and the OSA Quartet de Percussio, Mostra de Teatre Valencia, Spain. Dry Bones for flute quartet was presented August 7, by the Red Hot Chili Pipers, at the National Flute Association Convention in Las Vegas, NV; Scenes from the Holy Land for flute and percussion was performed September 16, by Kim McCormick and Robert McCormick, University of South Florida in Tampa. Night Tide, for trombone and percussion, was heard October 20 in a performance by the Marine Chamber Ensemble (The President's Own) at the George Washington National Masonic Theater, Alexandria, VA; Night Flight, for piccolo, clarinet, and piano, was presented October 29 by the Ronen Chamber Ensemble, Hilbert Circle Theatre, Indianapolis, IN.
