Michael G. Cunningham

New works by Michael G. Cunningham include the children's musical, The Seventh Destiny (lyricist Jerry Way); Nine Silhouettes and Kaleidoscope, both for orchestra; Septet; Diaphany for Orchestra and Wind Trio; Three Trifles for flute, vibes, and bass; and Inventions on a Circle for trumpet alone.

Premieres

Confections was performed during January 2003 by Stephanie Graber and the Stout University Band in conjunction with local bands in five locations in Holland and Germany. Premieres at Cunningham's residential university (University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire) included Piano Sonata No. 7, performed by Alexandre Dossin on November 17; on the same program pianists Nick Seeger, Nick Munagian, and David Snyder joined the composer in a performance of Piano Quartet. Earlier in the year, on two different April 27 programs, the works Overture to Aladdin McFaddin (Mark Heidel conducting the Wind Symphony) and Simon Suite (Rodney Hudson conducting the Symphony Band) were introduced.

Performances

Randal Dickerson led the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire Band in a performance of Michigania, on December 2, 2002. On May 4, 2002, on a program in Peck Recital Hall in Milwaukee, Piano Trio No.6 was presented by pianist Milton Peckarsky, violinist Jo Ann Haasler, and cellist Eric Haasler. On July 1, at Chautauqua (NY), Cabaletta was performed by saxophonist George Wolfe and guitarist Paul Reilly. Duologue was presented by saxophonist Jared Ziegler and marimbist Tim Dolyesh on July 12 at the International Saxophone Congress, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. Wakefield Autumn was performed June 13 by the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, Olomouc, The Czech Republic.

Publications

Thirty-three more recently-created small ensemble works were published by Seesaw Music Corporation. Among them are 15 duo sonatas involving piano, six trios involving piano, four duos, two trios, two piano works, a flute quartet, a brass quintet, and a woodwind quintet.
