The 2004 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 96, Number 2 Michael Mauldin **SAI Friend of the Arts Michael Mauldin was invited to participate in the August 11, 2003, Aspen (CO) Composers Conference, where he presented the recent recording of his Dreams of the Child of Light for Native American Flute and String Orchestra by the Polish National Radio Orchestra. Four of Mauldin's orchestral works were included in the Fourth Edition of David Daniels' book on orchestra music. PremieresDavid Oberg led the Chamber Orchestra of Albuquerque in the May 9, 2003, premiere of Dreams of the Child of Light for Native American Flute and String Orchestra, with James Pellerite, flute, at St. John's United Methodist Church, Albuquerque, NM. The three-movement work is dedicated to the Dalai Lama. The Albuquerque Boy Choir, under the direction of Edmund Torrez, gave the premiere performance of World Words, written for and dedicated to the group, on May 17 at the First United Methodist Church, Albuquerque, NM. The three-movement work was based on the book Worldwords, by Santa Fe physician and peace activist Victor La Cerva. PerformancesThe Modesto Community Orchestra, conducted by Anne Martin, performed Llanos on March 26, 2002, at the Modesto (CA) Junior College. Fantasy on Divinium Mysterium was presented by the Bel Canto Singers of the Children's Festival Chorus of Pittsburgh at the convention of the Organization of American Kodaly Educators, held in March 2003 in Minneapolis, MN. Lawrence Golan led the Colorado Youth Symphony Orchestra in a May 12 performance of Dawn at San Juan Mesa at the University of Denver. The New Mexico Woodwind Quintet performed the four-movement suite, Canyon Light, at the National Flute Association Convention, August 9, Las Vegas, NV. Arthur Post conducted the San Juan Symphony in performances of Three Jemez Landscapes on October 4-5, in Farmington, NM, and Durango, CO. PublicationsThe Minstrel Boy and Oh Had I Jubal's Lyre, both for SATB and piano; Santa Barbara Music Publishing. RecordingsThree Dances From Chaco Canyon and Dreams of the Child of Light for Native American Flute and String Orchestra (with James Pellerite, flute) were recorded by the Polish National Radio Orchestra, conducted by David Oberg, for Opus One Records, which will release them on separate CDs in 2004.
