The 2004 American Composers Update

M. William Karlins ***

SAI National Arts Associate M. William Karlins was honored composer and guest lecturer at the III Seminário de Pesquisa em Música, Goiânia, Brazil, August 27-September 5, 2003. He met with student composers at the Escola de Música e Artes Cênicas de Universidade Federal de Goiâs, where he gave a masterclass and was on a panel. Four of his compositions were performed on a special concert in the city. The first movement of his Woodwind Quintet No. 2 was published in Música Hodie, a periodical published by the school in Goiâs. March 30-April 1, Karlins was Composer-in-Residence at the University of Florida, Gainesville, where several of his pieces were heard on the New Music Ensemble's spring concert, March 31. Karlins gave a masterclass with graduate composers, a lecture on Suite of Preludes, and held a composition class discussion. October 8-12, Karlins was a guest composer at the University of Louisville. Two recent pieces, Improvisations on "Lines Where Beauty Lingers" for bass clarinet solo and Just a Line From Chameleon for two clarinets, were recorded for AUR Recordings (Arizona University Recordings, LLC), titled The Louisville Project. Just a Line From Chameleon was performed at the University on October 10.

Premieres

Improvisations on "Lines Where Beauty Lingers" for solo bass clarinet, was introduced by Richard Nunemaker on a program titled "New Music DePaul," May 30, 2003, DePaul Concert Hall, Chicago, IL. Under and Over (version 2) for violin and double bass, was premiered September 2 by Eliane Tokeshi, violin, and Sônia Ray, double bass; Teatro Goiânia, Brazil. On September 18, Paul Bro presented Improvisations on "Lines Where Beauty Lingers" (version 2) for solo saxophone, Indiana State University, Terre Haute, IN.

Performances

Impromptu for alto saxophone and organ, was heard September 12, 2002, Small Theatre of the Moscow Government Conservatory of P. I. Tchaikovsky, with saxophonist Frederick Hemke and organist Douglas Cleveland. The following pieces were heard March 31, 2003, on the New Music Ensemble Concert at the University of Florida, School of Music, Gainesville: Birthday Music No.1 for flute, bass clarinet (doubling clarinet) and double bass; and Night Light for saxophone quartet. Pianist Marina Machado performed Suite of Preludes, clarinetist Samuel Rodrigues performed Solo Piece with Passacaglia for clarinet, and the Oquestra Sinfônica de Goiânia, under the direction of Eliseu Ferreira, performed Elegy for orchestra, September 2 at the Teatro Goiânia, Goiânia, Brazil. Humble Harvest for solo piano was presented September 19, at Teatro Piccolo Arsenale in Venice, Italy, during the 47th Festival Internatzionale di Musica Contemporanea, which is part of la Biennale di Venezi; the performance was broadcast live on Italian radio.
