The 2004 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 96, Number 2 Samuel JonesSamuel Jones will serve for his seventh year as Composer-in-Residence of the Seattle (WA) Symphony Orchestra during the 2003-2004 season. He was a faculty member of the Conductors Institute of South Carolina in June 2003. He was awarded the 2003 Music Award by the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters for Eudora's Fable: The Shoe Bird. His next commissions are for works to be performed by the Seattle Symphony and individual members of the orchestra. PremieresChorale-Overture for Organ and Orchestra, commissioned by the Seattle (WA) Symphony to open its 100th Anniversary Season; and Centennial Hymn, for Organ and SATB Chorus, a second work written for the centennial of the Symphony; were both introduced September 18, 20-21, 2003, by the Seattle Symphony, the Seattle Symphony Chorale, and organist Joseph Adam, with Gerard Schwarz conducting. PerformancesClaire Fox Hillard led the Meridian (MS) Symphony in a performance of Chorale-Overture for Organ and Orchestra, February 2002. Elegy for String Orchestra, was heard in a November 30 Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra concert, in Boston, MA. Roundings (Symphonic Suite), received performances by the Meridian (MS) Symphony under Hillard, November 1, 2003, in Meridian, MS, and November 2, in Demopolis, AL. The New Jersey Symphony, Newark, NJ, is scheduled to perform Eudora's Fable: The Shoe Bird, February 14-15, 2004. On March 13, Hymn to the Earth (Suite No. 1 from Roundings) will be presented by the Northwest Symphony Orchestra, Des Plaines, IL, under the direction of Paul Vermel. The Temptation of Jesus will receive its premiere April 1, from the Meridian (MS) Symphony and Choral Society, Hillard conducting, Meridian, MS.
