The 2005 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 97, Number 2 Augusta Cecconi-Bates*The composer writes: “During 2004, Augusta successfully programmed Molly Brant in several Canadian venues. On Wolfe Island, Ontario, Don Cherry, the famous sportscaster, emceed Molly. Don is the colorful commentator for Canadian Hockey telecasts on CTV. The event gained a review in the National Post, wherein soprano Rhona Gale was hailed as the ‘Wayne Gretzky of the performance.’ Due to the success of the opera, Augusta has formed the company, T.W.O. (Three Women Opera) and has hired three groups to continue the performances throughout Ontario during the coming season. Rondino Clarino, a new work for band and clarinet solo, is scheduled for performance during the season by the U.S. Army Field Band.” PremieresTwo arias from the opera Cromwell and Fox (texts by John Gracen Brown) were presented in a recital on October 11, 2004, by tenor James Shults, accompanied by the composer, Cape Vincent, NY. PerformancesMolly Brant, as performed by soprano Rhona Gale, flutist Carrie Wyatt, and accompanied on the keyboard by the composer, received several hearings: at St. George’s Cathedral, Kingston, Ontario, April 16, 2004; in Cornwall Island, Ontario, August 8; and in Wolfe Island, Ontario, on August 20.
