The 2005 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 97, Number 2 Dinos ConstantinidesDinos Constantinides was invited to perform May 23, 2004, at George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium, in a program honoring the 2004 Athens Olympics. Sponsored by the Hellenic Society Prometheas of Washington, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of Greece, the program featured his music, including a piece commissioned for the occasion. In 2003-04, several students of Constantinides received doctoral degrees in composition as well as national awards: Liduino Pitombeira, Ph.D., was named MTNA-Shepherd Distinguished Composer of the Year; Carlo Vincetti Frizo, M.M. composition, won first place in the collegiate level of the 2003-04 MTNA National Student Competition; and other graduate students from the composer’s class received ASCAP awards. A doctoral dissertation, written by Laura Mobley Thomspon, was titled “Selected Songs of Dinos Constantinides: a Pedagogical and Comparative Study” and presented in December 2003 for the Doctor of Arts degree, University of Mississippi. PremieresMusic for Bill, for flute and string quartet, received its premiere August 29, 2004, at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. PerformancesPreludes or String Orchestra was heard in performance during August 2004 by the Brazilian Vitta Camerata, in São Paolo, Brazil. Midnight Song, for mezzo-soprano and orchestra, was presented September 12 by Lori Bade and the Louisiana Sinfonietta, Baton Rouge, LA. Impressions II for saxophone and piano, received hearings on November 23 in Thessaloniki and November 25 in Athens, Greece. On November 29, a concert of the composer’s works was given at the Greek Composers Union in Athens. Concerto of Psalms for violin, clarinet, and orchestra, was performed in Australia featuring soloists Elsa and Walter Verdehr.
