The 2005 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 97, Number 2 Michael G. CunninghamComposer Michael G. Cunningham announces the following new works: Clarinet Sonata; the opera The Magic Voice; Shakespeare Sonnets Set 9 for high soprano; Horn Sonata No. 2; Violin Sonata No. 3; Bassoon Sonata No. 2; Man About Town for six clarinets, sine-wave mix, and rhythm section; and Urban Samba for concert band. PremieresThe following premieres took place at the composer’s resident university, University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, during 2003-2004: Inventions on a Circle, November 12, trumpeter Daniel Urness; Trifles for Flute and Vibes, April 25, performed by Kara Sorenson and Nathan Burdick, and Adzak Suite for Concert Band, conducted by Phillip Ostrander; and, on May 2, Alan Rieck and the Women’s Concert Chorale introduced AnyOne and No One, along with the new SSA version of The Prayer of St. Francis. Randolph Fromme, cello, and Shu Li, piano, married musicians who perform as the Fromme Duo, presented Cello Sonata No. 2, October 3 at the San Francisco (CA) Conservatory of Music with a second performance November 4 at the Crow Collection of Asian Art Museum in Dallas, TX. PerformancesSaxophonist Matthew Pivec, accompanied by the composer, performed Capers on March 31, 2004, at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. The Norwegian tuba quartet Tubakvartten performed Chaconne at the Norwegian State Academy of Music on April 17 and again on July 22 at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, Hungary.
