The 2005 American Composers Update

as published in PAN PIPES, Volume 97, Number 2

Michael Mauldin**

From the CD liner notes for Earth Spirit by Michael Mauldin: “I grew up surrounded by the belief that nature was created. That it was created primarily for man to use and dominate, a kind of ‘manifest destiny’ for the whole planet. When I was young, it didn’t occur to me to question such an entitlement. Instead I questioned myself and nature. It took a lifetime to see that my early fascination with magical places, where the spirit of nature and the spirit of man interact with mutual reverence, was more than childish sentimentality. I finally recognized it as child-like wisdom, an unpolluted trace of the still, small voice of ‘all that is.’ ”

Performances

Russian-born pianist Natalia Efremova gave a lecture-recital featuring six Michael Mauldin works in Albuquerque and Los Alamos, NM, in March 2004 and in Paris, France, in April. April 17-18, the composer conducted the Symphony Orchestra of Albuquerque in his arrangements of Bach’s Bist du bei mir and Byrd’s The Carman’s Whistle. The Durango (CO) Children’s Chorale sang Why Didn’t You Tell Me? and Mauldin’s arrangement of Amazing Grace for a Mother’s Day concert on May 8. The New Mexico Symphony Orchestra performed the Prologue of Enchanted Land: Suite for Narrator and Orchestra on September 5 in Albuquerque. The Enid (OK) Symphony Orchestra and flutist James Pellerite performed Dreams of the Child of Light, for Native American Flute and String Orchestra, October 23-24.
