Nancy Galbraith****

Nancy Galbraith is completing Requiem for the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh. The work was commissioned to honor the 25th and final concert season of Music Director Robert Page, who will conduct the premiere in spring 2005. From March 17 thru 20, 2003, Galbraith was the featured Composer-in-Residence at the Seventh Festival of Women Composers International, sponsored by Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Four days of concerts and lectures were attended by composers, conductors, and performers from across the United States, including guest composers Libby Larson and Michelle DiBucci. Galbraith delivered the keynote address and enjoyed numerous performances of her compositions by a variety of ensembles from IUP and Carnegie Mellon University. Premieres

Fantasy for Orchestra, commissioned by the Johnstown (PA) Symphony Orchestra to celebrate its 75th anniversary, was premiered October 18, 2003, by the orchestra, under the direction of Istvan Jaray, at the Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center, Johnstown, PA. God of Justice, commissioned by the Providence Family Support Center (a social service agency of the Sisters of Divine Providence) to celebrate the center’s 10th anniversary, was introduced September 18, 2004, by the Providence Festival Chorus and Orchestra under the direction of Thomas Octave, with mezzo-soprano Mimi Lerner and narrator Paul Johnston, at LaRoche College, Pittsburgh, PA. Zelo, commissioned by Three Rivers Young People’s Orchestra Symphonette to celebrate its 30th anniversary, was presented by the orchestra and conductor Charlotta Ross on May 8, Carnegie Music Hall, Pittsburgh, PA.

Performances

Missa Mysteriorum was performed October 18, 2003, by the Choral Art Society of Portland (ME) in Merrill Auditorium, Portland, under the direction of Robert Russell. Banda Sinfônica Jovem, with guest conductor Laszlo Marosi, presented with brightness round about it on May 22, 2004, at the Auditório Simón Bolívar, São Paulo, Brazil. Danza de los Duendes was heard in concert May 24 in a performance by the DePaul Wind Symphony, conducted by Donald DeRoche, DePaul University, Chicago, IL. Nocturno – In memory of the missing (from Atacama Sonata) was presented June 13-18 by flutist Alberto Almarza and pianist Dora de Marinis, at the Festival Internacional de Flauta, Osorno, Chile. A Festive Violet Pulse was performed September 25 by the Owensboro (KY) Symphony Orchestra, led by Nicholas Palmer, River Park Center.
