The 2005 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 97, Number 2 Steven L. RosenhausSteven Rosenhaus has been, to say the least, quite busy. In October 2003 he conducted the United States Naval Academy Band (CDR Donald Keller, Leader) in the premiere of Symphony for Band (Academy). The Naval Academy Band, which commissioned the work in celebration of its 150th anniversary, subsequently performed the Symphony at Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA, and recorded it for a CD to be released in 2005. Symphony for Band was also performed by the United States Navy Band, LCDR Ralph Ingraham conducting, in McLean, VA. Dr. Rosenhaus, who serves on the faculties of New York University and Nassau Community College as Adjunct Assistant Professor, also saw the release of three new recordings. Commissions for the 2004-2005 season include: a second work for the United States Naval Academy Band, this one for solo piano and band, and whose premiere will feature pianist Laura Leon; a new work for the Sacred Heart University Band, Keith Johnston, conductor; and a new work for the New Hudson Saxophone Quartet, premiered in New York City in November 2004. Rosenhaus and co-author Allen Cohen are completing the book “Writing Musical Theater” for Palgrave/McMillan (St. Martin’s Press), which will publish it in 2005. PremieresSymphony for Band (Academy) was premiered by the United States Naval Academy Band, under the direction of the composer, on October 10, 2003, at the US Naval Academy, Annapolis. In the Cave of Aeolus, a work for four flutes commissioned by Flute Cocktail, was introduced March 13, 2004, Carnegie (Weill) Hall, New York, NY. A new work written for the New Hudson Saxophone Quartet was first heard in November 2004, while new works written for the U.S. Naval Academy Band and the Sacred Heart University Band, are scheduled to premiere in April 2005. PerformancesSymphony for Band was performed by the U.S. Naval Academy Band on February 8, 2004, at Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA and by the U.S. Navy Band on May 21 in McLean, VA. Pro*Ject was performed by pianist Laura Leon on September 23, at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College, NY. PublicationsThe article “Symphonic Poem,” written for Encyclopedia of Storytelling, is scheduled to be published in 2005. The book Writing Musical Theater, co-written with Allen Cohen, will be published in 2005 by Palgrave/McMillan (St. Martin’s Press). Recordings“Diverse Light, Volume 2,” produced by Steven L.
