Stephen Yarbrough

Stephen Yarbrough has been the recipient of several new commissions: Dakota Diary, an octet for flute, oboe, horn, string quartet, and piano, was commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra, Washington, DC; In the Bulb There is a Flower, for choir and organ, with flute and handbells, was commissioned by the UCC Church, Vermillion, SD; and Land of the Open Sky, a seven-movement suite for children’s choir with piano, was commissioned by the Rapid City (SD) Children’s Choir.

Premieres

What Sweeter Music for chorus and orchestra was introduced by the South Dakota Symphony Chorus and Orchestra under the direction of Henry Charles Smith. Over Easy, a double bass sextet was first heard in a performance by the South Dakota Double Bass Section. The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jung-Ho Pak, premiered Prairie Triptych: Three Movements for Orchestra. In the Bulb There Is a Flower, for choir, organ, flute, handbells, was commissioned and premiered by the Vermillion UCC Noble Choir, conducted by Gretchen Burbach.

Performances

Alleluias for Orchestra was performed by the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Henry Charles Smith. The Interlochen High School Orchestra, led by Stephen Ward, presented After School, for full orchestra. Flutist Stephenie Kocher performed Pastorale for flute and piano, and organist Theo Wee presented In Glory Sing.
