The 2006 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 98, Number 2 Augusta Cecconi-Bates* During 2005, Augusta Cecconi-Bates presented performances of her mini-opera Molly Brant in Canada with soprano Eileen Strempel, violinist Joan Sutherland, and pianist Clare Gordon. The trio then went to Syracuse (NY) University to cut the CD of the arias of the opera for distribution to prospective sponsors. Molly Brant in three-act format will be presented in seven venues in Canada and in the U.S. during 2006. The composer attended the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago in December 2004 and the Association of Concert Bands convention in Pennsylvania in April 2005. Performances Two works for concert band are scheduled for performances in April 2006Paragraph and Tango, written for saxophonist Dale Underwood, will have several performances with Underwood as soloist; and Rondino Clarino, a work for band and clarinet solo, is tentatively scheduled for performance during the up-coming season (it previously had a reading by student musicians in Colborne, Ontario, with the composer as conductor).
