The 2006 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 98, Number 2 Donald Reid Womack** Donald Reid Womack is living and working in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he is Professor and Chair of Composition/Theory and Music Department Associate Chair at the University of Hawaii. Premieres Above all Nations, a processional for concert band, was first heard May 15, 2005, by the University of Hawaii Band. Scherzophrenic for solo cello was presented by I-Bei Lin in Carnegie Hall, NY, on June 5. After, a 30-minute work for shakuhachi, koto, and orchestra, received premiere performances by the Honolulu (HI) Symphony January 6 and 8, 2006. Naoto Otomo conducted the orchestra with soloists Seizan Sakata and Reiko Kimura. The work was commissioned as a memorial to the victims of the Ehime Maru, a Japanese ship accidentally sunk by a U.S. Navy submarine in 2001.
