The 2006 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 98, Number 2 Greg A. Steinke Greg A. Steinke received a Residency at Caldera Blue Lake Facility to work on composition projects in May 2004, Portland, OR. He was the winner of the Contemporary Music-Making for Amateurs Open Score Call (in England) for inclusion in the first Open Score Collection for “In Memoriam – Sacajawea,” June 2004; and received honorable mention in the VIII International Composition Competition of the Corfu Festival for East of . . .West of . . ., September 2005. Recent commissions for works to premiere in 2006 include Danish Guitar Quartet for transcriptions of Bach’s Italian Concerto and Partita No. 2 and Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin; and the Catalina Chamber Orchestra of Tucson, AZ for Mother Earth. New works include Moments at Canyon de Chelly, flute/oboe; Van Gogh Vignettes (Image Music XXII-A), violin/viola duet; Van Gogh Vignettes (Image Music XXII-B), flute/viola duet; Sonance and Keen, oboe/theremin; Suspended, bassoon/strings; Mother Earth, soprano, baritone, chamber orchestra. Mother Earth: A Native American View (work in progress) was presented at the Society of Composers, Inc., (SCI) Regional Conference, San Antonio, TX (February 2005) and at Art Culture, University of Washington, Bothell (May 2005). Steinke received ASCAP Standard Awards in 2004 and 2005. He performed as first oboist with the Catalina Chamber Orchestra and as second oboist with the North Coast Orchestra. Premieres East Of ... West Of ... for solo guitar was introduced April 7, 2004, by Paul Reilly, Ball State University, Muncie, IN. Expressions II on Paintings of Wassily Kandinsky (Image Music XXIII) for 2 saxophones and chamber ensemble was presented April 8 by Anna Wytko and colleagues at University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; the same ensemble presented the work again on November 29 at Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ. The Corona Guitar Quartet of Denmark premiered Within the Curtain of Color and Time (Image Music XXIV), October 15, Green Valley (AZ) Concert Association; subsequent performances took place on October 6, 2004, Tabaret Hall, Ottawa, Canada, and October 7, Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur, Montreal, Canada. To Get to Fresno for voice, flute, and piano was first heard in performance January 29-30, 2005, by Row Twelve Contemporary Music Ensemble, Boston and Cambridge, MA; the same ensemble also premiered Cross Currents for reciter and chamber ensemble, April 23-24, Boston and Cambridge, MA, and Canyon de Chelly for flute and oboe, with the composer as guest oboist, June 18, Stowe, MA. All in a Moment’s Time for viola and orchestra received its premiere October 15, from Scott Rawls and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro (UNCG) Symphony Orchestra, led by Robert Gutter, at the SCI National Conference, Greensboro, NC. Yaponcha, for flute, viola, and harp, was introduced October 29 by the Debussy Trio, in Los Angeles, CA. Performances The violin and marimba version of Memories of Chief Joseph was heard on March 25, 2005, at The College Music Society Regional Conference, University of Nevada-Las Vegas. “In Memoriam – Sacajawea” from Wind River Country for woodwind quintet was performed May 9 by the Equinox Chamber Players, Ethical Society of St. Louis, MO. “Street Dance” from Beijing Impressions for chamber orchestra was presented August 6 by Blue Lake (MI) Festival Orchestra, William Stewart Memorial Music Shell. Inquietude for solo flute was performed by Elissa Lakofsky of the Nodus Ensemble, October 1, Wolfsonian, Miami Beach, FL.
