The 2006 American Composers Update

Halide K. Smith

Several of Halide K. Smith’s original compositions were performed in a Hurricane Katrina victims benefit concert titled “A Bouquet of Creativity in Music,” December 6, 2005, at the Rosedale Golf and Country Club in Bradenton, FL. Performers included vocalist Ann Riddlel, violinist Edward Pritchett, and pianist Mary Webb.                 

Premieres

Dream Land was introduced October 9, 2004, by flutist Estelle Schultz and bassoonist Judith Teeuwen at a Sarasota (FL) SAI Alumnae program.

Performances

Melody in G Minor was performed by violinist Edward Pritchett and pianist Mary Webb in February 2004 at the Sarasota (FL) Music Club, while in May, Inspiration was presented by bassoonist Teeuwen and clarinetist Mort Meldel at Haile Middle School. Several works were performed on an October 9th SAI Alumnae program by flutist Schutz, bassoonist Teeuwen and pianist Barbara Lanning, and recorded compositions were heard during the November National League of American Pen Women luncheon at the Marina Jacks, Sarasota, FL. Birinci and Dream Land were heard in a January 2005 performance by pianist Dorothy Whaley, Schultz, and Teeuwen at the Glenridge Performing Arts Center, Sarasota, FL. Inspiration, as well as Birinci and Dream Land, were performed March 17 by Schultz, Teeuwen, and pianist Evelyn Haymaker at a joint meeting of the Cecilian and Sarasota Music Clubs, Jacarando Country Club, Venice, FL.
