The 2006 American Composers Update

as published in PAN PIPES, Volume 98, Number 2

Jeffrey Hoover

Jeffrey Hoover collaborated during summer 2005 via the internet, with Accessible Contemporary Music in Chicago, directed by Seth Boustead. The resulting composition, Dancing in the Park, evolved in weekly installments. The work is scored for flute/piccolo, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, percussion, piano, violin, viola, and cello. Hoover composed and sent the music via the internet, and then ACM rehearsed and recorded the music. The composition evolved in response to these recordings and comments from the musicians. ACM posted the recordings on its website, so that interested people could follow the evolution of the music from its genesis to completion; comments by the composer and the musicians were also posted. Dancing in the Park was premiered in Chicago on November 12, 2005. An orchestral version, with expanded instrumentation, is planned
for the future. The webpage for this is project is located at www.acmusic.org/composeralive.html. New compositions for 2005-2006 will include Summer’s Light, for flute and marimba, to be premiered by Nora Lee Gardiaand Orlando Cotto; a new solo piano work for Darcy Prilliman; and a new work for mandolin for Daniel Ahlert of the Duo Ahlert & Schwab, Germany.

Premieres

Mysteries for clarinet and CD was presented by Michael Dean on his Southern California tour during November 2005; this is the premiere of the clarinet version of this work, which was initially written for soprano saxophone.
