The 2006 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 98, Number 2 Michael Braz** Professor of Music at Georgia Southern University, Michael Braz chairs the theory-composition area. He recently completed a term as Charter President of the Coastal Georgia Alumni Association of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. In January 2005, Braz presented a choral composing workshop to school choir directors at the Georgia Music Educators 2006 In-Service Conference in Savannah. He is currently completing the orchestration of a two-act opera concerning racial politics in 1941 Georgia and the firing of a respected college president by the populist governor of the state. The work, A Scholar Under Siege, is Braz’s second opera, and will be premiered spring 2007 as a part of Georgia Southern’s Centennial celebration. Premieres A setting of Deep River was commissioned by Musical Director Thomas Sibley for the Raleigh Boychoir; the premiere performance was conducted by the composer at the Boychoir’s American Music Festival in 2005.
