The 2006 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 98, Number 2 Michael Kurek Composer Michael Kurek was selected as a candidate for election to the Nashville Chapter of the Recording Academy Board of Governors, held in April 2005. In April, Kurek served as a national judge, along with distinguished composers Samuel Adler and Judith Zaimont, in the National Federation of Music Clubs Young Composers Competition, for the Marion Richter American Music Awards, and the Victor Herbert/ASCAP Awards. In May, he served as principal adjudicator for the international music awards of the Golden Key Honor Society. In June, an interview with the composer appeared on line in Mel Bay Publications’ “Creative Webzine,” which may be read at: www.creativekeyboard.com/jun05/interview.html. Performances The Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen, Norichika Limori, conductor, performed Concertino for Celesta and Orchestra: “Fairy Dreams,” in Reutlingen, Germany, on March 17, 2005. The composer attended the performance as a guest of the Schiedmayer Celesta Company. The work is also slated for broadcast on one of the most important radio stations for the broadcast of classical music in German, “Klassic Radio.” The Cincinnati (OH) Ballet gave twelve performances of Pas de deux November 1-12. Violist Michael Bergen presented Sonata for Viola and Piano in Stuttgart, Germany, in January 2006; a further performance of the work, scheduled at Tulane University for February 2006, will be moved or postponed due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina.
