The 2006 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 98, Number 2 Victoria Bond Victoria Bond served as host moderator for Cutting Edge Concerts on April 7, 14, and 21, 2005; on the final concert, Duo Gelland premiered Woven. She conducted the Chamber Opera Chicago for Gian Carlo Menotti’s operas The Medium and The Telephone, May 31 - June 19, and plans to conduct the company in Menotti’s The Consul in 2006. She will also conduct Eric Salzman’s The True Last Words of Dutch Schultz at the Center for Contemporary Opera in 2006. Bond was Composer-in-Residence at Pianofest 2005 in East Hampton, NY, and was commissioned to compose Binary, which premiered August 1 with pianists Jiayin Shen and Michael Berkovsky. A chamber music concert titled Woven SoundsA Musical Tapestry, was presented August 6 at Jack Larsen’s Longhouse in East Hampton. Included in the program were string quartets Dreams of Flying and My Grandfather’s Balalaika, Woven, and several solo works. Bond is collaborating with historian Dr. Myles Lee on a work for narrator and wind ensemble titled Pater Patriae, using the words of George Washington, which will premiere at Mount Vernon in 2007. Bond has also been commissioned to compose a triple concerto for the Aurea Trio and the Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra. Premieres But on the Other Hand, commissioned by New York-based string quartet Ethel, was given its first hearing on February 26, 2005, in Los Angeles, CA. The Claremont Duo premiered Breath for cello and guitar on an April 1 Bargemusic concert. Violinist Renee Jolles and harpist Susan Jolles presented Sacred Sisters (commissioned by the American Society for Jewish Music) on April 10 at The Center for Jewish History, New York, NY. Performances The string quartet Dreams of Flying was heard on a May 2, 2005, program, Women in MusicA Celebration of Accomplishment, Otterbein College, Westerville, OH. On May 7, harpsichordist Kenneth Cooper performed Peculiar Plants during a Chamber Music program at St. Andrew’s in Fallsburg, NY. On July 13, at the Music Festival of the Hamptons, Art and Science was performed. The Frog Prince was presented on July 23 for a Young Peoples’ Concert at the same festival, featuring the Sylvan Winds, with the composer as narrator. Further Information |
