The 2006 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 98, Number 2 Walter S. Hartley** Walter S. Hartley was the recipient of his 43rd consecutive ASCAP Award in 2005. Premieres Carol for soprano saxophone and piano was premiered April 1, 2005, by saxophonist Gregg Murphy, with the composer at the piano, West Forsyth High School, NC. Trio Sonata was introduced on April 5 by alto saxophonist Vernon Neeley, cellist Rachel Pinkney, and pianist Rosemary Williams. The John F. Kennedy Catholic High School Band, under the direction of Charles Gray, premiered Fanasy on Celtic Hymn Tunes on April 18, Somers, NY. Performances Chautauqua Overture, In Memoriam, and Concerto for Three Trombones and Band, were heard in a March 3, 2005, concert featuring faculty soloists and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Symphonic Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Laurence Marks. A program titled “Single Reed Music of Walter Hartley” was presented March 8 at Syracuse (NY) University; two clarinet and seven saxophone chamber works were performed under the direction of Ronald L. Caravan. On April 7, a Rutgers University program, “A Tribute to Walter S. Hartley,” presented ten saxophone chamber works, conducted by Paul Cohen and Ken Zampella.
