The 2007 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 99, Number 2 Arthur Gottschalk The composer writes: “In February, I hosted the 2006 Region VI Conference of the Society of Composers, Inc., at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. In November of 2006 I accepted an artist residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, and lectured on ‘Music and Film’ as part of the Weill School of Medicine (Cornell University) symposium on ‘Music and the Brain.’ ... I have been engaged to compose the music for the feature film Alamo Gold.” Premieres Trumpeter Robert Walp introduced Sonata for trumpet and piano on February 10, 2006, at the SCI Region VI, Rice University, Houston, TX. At the same event, Ut Queant Laxis was presented on February 11 by organists Phillip Kloeckner and Elaine Walters. Come, Light was premiered on February 26 by the Choir of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, accompanied by organist Kloeckner, in Lake Jackson, TX. Phase 59 was first heard in an October 12 performance by Electronic Music MidWest, at Lewis University, Romeoville, IL. On October 27, the MTSU Trumpet Ensemble, directed by Michael Arndt, premiered The Flight of the Killer Bees, at Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, TN. Performances Percussionist James Metcalfe performed Voices in My Head at Zilkha Hall, Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, Houston, TX. Ceremonial Fanfare was heard in performance at the International Women’s Brass Conference, Illinois State University, Normal, IL. Alto saxophonist Jeffrey Loeffort presented Shall We Gather at the World Saxophone Congress, in Ljublijana, Slovenia. The Fountains was performed by trumpeter Nicole Lyons on September 9 at the Royal Academy of Music, in London, England. On September 14, the UTSA Percussion Ensemble, directed by Sherry Rubins, performed Celtic Drumline for the College Music Society National Conference, University of Texas at San Antonio.
