The 2007 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 99, Number 2 Carol Barnett **** Carol Barnett writes: “I’ve been commissioned by VocalEssence to write a Bluegrass Mass. The premiere will be January 19 and 20, 2007, in Stillwater and Minneapolis, MN; the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers will be joined by Monroe Crossing.” Premieres Donald Lovejoy conducted the 2006 Minnesota Intercollegiate Honor Band in the premiere of Tirana on February 18, 2006, at the Minneapolis Convention Center Auditorium. Music for Heroines (texts by Jila Nikpay), was premiered by soprano Janet Gottschall-Fried and harpist Judith Kogan on April 8 at the Open Book and subsequently performed April 11 at the Southern Theatre, both in Minneapolis, MN. The newly revised Meeting at Seneca Falls (libretto by Marisha Chamberlain) was presented by soprano Jan Peden, mezzo-soprano Kathleen Humphrey, baritone Julius Collins, pianist Barb Brooks, and percussionist Jay Johnson, on September 15, at the Sheldon Theatre, Red Wing, MN. Performances Two pieces were presented February 9, 2006, at the Rudolph Ganz Memorial Hall in Chicago, IL: From the Good Earth, by the Chicago College of Performing Arts Women’s Chorus, under the direction of Ann Heider; and Dance of Zalongo, by the Chicago College of Performing Arts University Choirs, conducted by Cheryl Frazes Hill. On February 18, the Minnesota All-State Women’s Choir, led by Mary Alice Stollak, performed Winter, Snow in Orchestra Hall, Minneapolis, MN. Publications Tirana, band; by Boosey & Hawkes.
