The 2007 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 99, Number 2 Dan Locklair** Dan Locklair is currently Composer-in-Residence and Professor of Music at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC. He has been named resident composer for the Virginia Festival of American Voices, March 17-25, 2007, in Norfolk, VA, which will feature the Virginia Chorale and Virginia Symphony Chorus (Robert Shoup, Director), the Virginia Symphony Orchestra (JoAnn Falletta, Conductor), and many East Coast choral ensembles. This Festival is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and will culminate in a television broadcast that will feature the world premiere of the composer’s Stirring the Silence for double chorus, children’s chorus, and string orchestra, based on American poet Fred Chappell’s poem, “The Attending,” which was commissioned by the Virginia Chorale. Premieres Lairs of Soundings for soprano and double string orchestra, based on the poetry of Ursula K. LeGuin, was introduced February 5, 2006, by soprano Stephanie Foley with the Fibonacci Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Matthew Troy, University of North Carolina-Greensboro School of Music,. In the Cross of Christ I Glory, an a cappella anthem for SATB choir, received its premiere October 8 from Renaissance, led by Robert Pritchard, Duke Chapel, Durham, NC. The Adult Choir of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, under the direction of Barbara Beattie, presented Remembrance for SATB, organ, and trumpet, on November 5, in Winston-Salem, NC. Performances Indianapolis (IN) Symphonic Choir, under the direction of Eric Stark, presented From East to West, for SATB choir, organ, brass, and timpani at the American Choral Directors Central Division Convention, Chicago, IL. Organist Haig Mardirosian performed Windows of Comfort (Two Organbooks) at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, in College Park, MD, while organist Timothy Buram-Wigfield presented excerpts from Rubrics for Organ in Windsor Castle, England. The Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys, led by John Scott, presented Brief Mass, Pater Noster, and O Sacrum Convivium at St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, New York, NY. St. Peter’s Rock, for SATB, organ, and trumpet, and Ubi Caritas for unison voices and organ, were heard on a November 4 program titled “Illuminate: Innovative Voices, Past and Present” by The Worcester (MA) Chorus (Andrew Clark, Music Director), United Congregation Church. Gloria, for SSAATTBB chorus, brass octet, and percussion, and Ubi Caritas were heard in performances by the Choral Art Society, under the direction of Robert Russell, December 2-3, Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Portland, ME.
