The 2007 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 99, Number 2 Elizabeth Ruth Beeson* Elizabeth Beeson gave a lecture titled “Fine Arts in the Community” on March 13, 2006, at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Houston, TX, where she accepted a position as head of Fine Arts in the Community Learning Center. In June, she presented a music history series, “The Church in Medieval Europe” at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston, TX. Beeson School of Music courses for the year included: piano, voice, vocal ensemble, keyboard harmony, theory and ear-training. Student performances were given at Treemont Retirement Home and Memorial Drive Church. As pianist and organist, Beeson played at Holy Rosary, First Baptist, St. Martin’s, and Memorial Drive Methodist Church. She also served as interim organist/pianist at Ashford United Methodist Church in Houston, and gave performances ranging from theatrical performance to entertainment, religious presentations, and classical music. The composer completed a commission from the University of St. Thomas in Houston to advise on housing music resource material, and a second commission to research a German Hymnal and provide information and background on its contents. Beeson played in a professional recording of the musical Make ‘em Smile, Make ‘em Laugh by Sandra Williams, which was presented on April 27,at Houston’s First Baptist Church. Premieres A Tribute, Anita, The Wave, and The Dead were all premiered as piano solos transcribed from other genres and played by the composer on August 6, 2006, at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston, TX. Performances During the summer of 2006, the composer performed the following piano solos at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston, TX: The Fantastic Suite, A Victory Piece, Modal Suite, The Happy Sailor, and Easter Sunrise. *Sigma Alpha Iota Member Further Information
