The 2007 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 99, Number 2 Michael Braz** Professor of Music at Georgia Southern University, Michael Braz chairs the Theory-Composition area. In March 2007, Braz will present a choral composing workshop titled “Composing Music for the Boychoir” at the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) National Convention in Miami, FL. Premieres In November 2006, pianist Giuseppi Lupis introduced Three Provocations (1. A Mouse in the Carillon, 2. Languor, 3. Uneasy Lies the Head…) for the State Conference of the Georgia Music Teachers Association, who commissioned the work. In April 2007, Georgia Southern University will premiere A Scholar Under Siege, a two-act opera concerning racial politics in 1941 Georgia and the firing of a respected college president by the populist governor of the state. The work, the composer’s second opera, will be performed as a part of Georgia Southern’s Centennial celebration. Performances Jubilate Deo, for SSA voices and keyboard, was performed as a part of the Tenth International Children’s Choir Festival in Canterbury and London, England. Conducted by Henry Leck, the work was performed in two versions: the original keyboard accompaniment and a new orchestration created specifically for the Festival.
