The 2007 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 99, Number 2 Margaret Brouwer Margaret Brouwer has been awarded a 2006 Academy Award in Music from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, an honorary society of America’s most notable artists, writers, and composers, founded in 1904 by the National Institute of Arts and Letters. The Academy merged with the Institute in 1976, and membership is limited to 250 U.S. citizens. The Academy Awards are given annually: five to artists, eight to writers, four to composers, and three to architects. The Academy-Institute is located in New York City. Performances During the composer’s tenure as Composer-in-Residence at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, April 11-15, 2006, various works were heard on an April 13 Musica Nova concert. Clarinetist Daniel Silver and the University of Iowa’s Maia String Quartet presented Quartet for Clarinet in A and String Quartet, on June 8; the same program was repeated on August 10. Trio, commissioned by The Verdehr Trio and Michigan State University, was introduced by the ensemble on August 12 at the International Clarinet Association Conference, Atlanta, GA; the work will be performed again by the Trio on March 7, 2007, at the Cleveland (OH) Institute of Music New Music Festival.
