The 2007 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 99, Number 2 Samuel JonesSamuel Jones will serve for his tenth year as Composer-in-Residence of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra for the 2006-2007 season. He was in residence during February-March 2006 at Millsaps College, Jackson, MS, as a guest of the English Department, to lecture on his compositions based on works of Eudora Welty. He was a faculty member of the Conductors Institute of South Carolina in June. PremieresConcerto for Tuba and Orchestra was introduced on January 5 and 7, 2006, by tubist Christopher Olka and the Seattle (WA) Symphony Orchestra under Gerard Schwarz; a repeat performance was given on May 18 for the Seattle Symphony’s Made in America Festival. PerformancesThe Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestra, led by Efrain Amaya, presented Listen Now, My Children March 1, 2005, in Pittsburgh, PA. The Warren (MI) Symphony, under the direction of David Daniels, performed Let Us Now Praise Famous Men on April 24. Symphony No. 3 (Palo Duro Canyon), was heard in a September 17 performance by the Mississippi Symphony, led by Crafton Beck, Jackson, MS. The Open Range (Suite No. 3 from “Roundings”) was directed by Donald Portnoy at the Conductors Institute of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. Warren Friesen led the Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra and Children’s Chorus in a July 26 performance of Eudora’s Fable: The Shoe Bird, Duluth, MN.
