The 2007 American Composers Updateas published in PAN PIPES, Volume 99, Number 2 Walter S. Hartley** Walter S. Hartley received his 44th ASCAPLus Award in the Concert Division. He also reports the following new compositions, which have yet to be published: Chamber Suite for eleven players; Trio-Sonatina for soprano and baritone saxophones, and piano; Trio for Reeds (oboe, clarinet, bassoon); Prelude and Dance for two soprano saxophones and piano; Suite for Piano; and Concert Music for eleven saxophones and piano. Premieres Ronald Caravan and Sar Shalom Strong introduced Aria and Toccata, for clarinet and piano, on February 19, 2006, at Syracuse (NY) University. Sinfornia Caroliniana for wind ensemble was first heard in a February 25 performance by the University of North Carolina-Charlotte Symphonic Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Laurence Marks, at the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) Southern Division Conference, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. Craig Barnfield and Daniel Espinoza, accompanied by pianist Liz Lyons, presented Prelude and Dance for two soprano saxophones and piano on July 22 at the Cardinal Saxophone Workshop, University of Louisville, KY. Performances The UNCC Symphonic Wind Ensemble, conducted by Laurence Marks, performed Nonet for winds and brass on February 25, 2006, for the CBDNA SD Conference at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. Duet for Basses was presented by Paul Cohen (contrabass saxophone) and Nathanial Berman (tuba) on April 1, at the Harmonic Convergence, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. Overture, Interlude and Scherzo was heard in an April 12 concert by the University of Louisville Saxophone Ensemble, under the direction of John Moore. Soloist Jay Easton and the Henry Foss High School Symphonic Band, under the direction of Richard Byrnes, performed Concertino No. 2, for bass saxophone and band, on April 19 in Seattle, WA. Mark Taggart led the Cardinal Workshop Saxophone Orchestra in a July 23 performance of Serenade for Saxophones, at the University of Louisville, KY.
