Annual American Composers Update

Dinos Constantinides

Head of Composition and Boyd Professor of Music at Louisiana State University (LSU), in Baton Rouge, Dinos Constantinides leads the Louisiana Sinfonietta. In 1997 he won an ASCAP Standard Award, and his Study III won the Delius Festival Performance Award. Pending CD's are Rhapsody, for flute and piano, by Capstone Recordings; Transformations for Oboe Alone, by Crystal Records; and Concerto for Orchestra, by Vienna Modern Masters. In 1995 Greek publications Greek Creators and Lexicon of Greek Composers (by Aleka Symeonidou, Editions Nakas) had articles about him. Public radio aired his works in Greece, Miami, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Princeton, and Honolulu. In 1995-96 he made guest appearances at conferences and festivals in Berlin; New York; Kansas City, MO; Oshkosh, WI; Stetson Univ., FL; Portland, OR; Mississippi University for Women; and in Hammond, Thibodaux, New Orleans, and Lafayette, LA. He has led the LSU Composers' Forum and New Music Ensemble, and is the LMTA Commissioning Chairman.

Premieres

Works heard first with the Louisiana Sinfonietta include Baroque Concerto for Guitar, with Nicholas Goluses, January 1998; and Preludes for String Orchestra, in New Roads, LA and Baton Rouge, September 1997. In June 1997, the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra gave the premiere of Concerto for Orchestra, in Olomouc, The Czech Republic. The Elysium String Quartet introduced Preludes at Weill Hall, New York, NY, June 1997. Violinist Jennifer Tiboris premiered Idyll in New York, October 1995. In October 1995 Phillip Brown presented Tate at Murray (KY) State University and at Oberlin College.

Performances

In May 1997 Ning Tien soloed with the Kumming (China) Philharmonic, in the composer's Cello Concerto. In July 1997 programs in Constante, Romania, included Midnight Fantasy, with the Black Sea Philharmonic; and To Music, with the Black Sea New Music Ensemble. Heard with the Fujen University Symphony, Taipei, Taiwan, were Opera Antigone Selections and Dedications for Strings, both October 1997. Impressions for Clarinet was played at the International College Music Society Convention, Vienna, January 1997.
