Annual American Composers Update
Ellis B. Kohs
Ellis B. Kohs resides in Los Angeles.
CRI
will be releasing an all-Kohs CD, with titles to be
determined. In the planning stages is a production of
Lord of the Ascendant, based on the Sumerian
legend of Gilgamesh, with dancer Adam Cooper of the
London-based AMP Company. Kohs has prepared a catalog
of his works, for use by libraries and performers, to
be held in the New York Public Library at Lincoln Center.
A Short Concert for String Quartet (String Quartet
No. 2) has been choreographed by Adam Cooper for the
City of London Ballet's 1998 season.
Premieres
In Los Angeles, a University of Southern
California concert in honor of the composer's 80th birthday
included pianist Stewart Gordon in the first performances
of MacBeth Piano Suite and Sousa Parody March
(Stars and Stripes Forever in 12-tone style, arranged
from the Kohs opera Amerika), Jan. 25, 1998.
Performances
The same program included a tape of
the 1953 premiere of A Short Concert for String Quartet,
with the Paganini String Quartet; and Passacaglia
for Organ and Strings, featuring organist Maija
Lehtonen and the Finnish conductor Manfred Gräsbeck.
