Annual American Composers Update
K Marie Stolba
SAI member K Marie Stolba is a resident
of Fort Wayne, IN, where she is Professor Emerita at
Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW)
and serves as Music Director at North Highlands Presbyterian
Church. She is also Visiting Distinguished Lecturer
at Colorado Christian University, in Lakewood, CO. In
late 1997-early 1998, McGraw-Hill Publishers was due
to release the third edition of
The Development of
Western Music: A History and The Development of Western
Music: An Anthology, together with CD and cassette
recordings prepared by SONY. She was Editor of
The
College Music Society (CMS) Newsletter through June
1997, and wrote "Reflections on CMS International Conference,"
for the newsletter, September 1997. She has been writing
book reviews and articles for
Pan Pipes, including
"Letter from Vienna," (Fall issue), and an article for
IPFW's
ArtScene, "Vienna in July: College Music
Society International Conference," (Fall issue). In
1997 she presented papers on "Music and the Art of Marc
Chagall," at the CMS International Conference in Vienna,
Austria (July 4); and on "History and the Arts," at
IPFW (Oct. 20).
Premieres
What is Music?, for SAA choir,
flute, and piano, commissioned by the
Fort
Wayne SAI Alumnae Chapter to commemorate its 25th
anniversary, was heard first at Beta Province State
Day, Apr. 19, 1997 at IPFW, with the Fort Wayne Alumnae
Chapter Chorale, led by Judy Rice, and flutist Linda
Allen.
Performances
Accompanied by organist Al Hein, a series
of solos was heard as preludes to several North Highlands
Presbyterian Church sevices, including Serenity,
sung by Carol Kent; The Oxen, Heritage, and Redemption,
sung by Andrew Gingrich; and Reflections, with
the composer playing the violin.
