Annual American Composers Update
Leonardo Balada
Leonardo Balada serves as University
Professor of Music Composition at Carnegie Mellon University,
in Pittsburgh, PA. In September 1997 he judged the Francisco
Tarrega Guitar International Competition in Benicassim,
Spain, and served as composer in residence at the international
festival Encontre de Compositors in Palma de Mallorca.
Premieres
On Oct. 18-19, in Barcelona, Spain,
the National Chorus of Spain, from Madrid, and the Barcelona
Symphony Orchestra, under Lawrence Foster, premiered
No-Res (
G.
Schirmer, Inc.), a 40-minute tragedy about death
and taboos, for narrator, choir, and orchestra.
Concierto
Magico, for guitar and orchestra, which had its
first performances March 13-14, 1997, with Angel Romero
and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, led by Jesus
Lopez-Cobos, will be heard again Apr. 18 and 20, 1998,
with the Chicago Sinfonietta, conducted by Paul Freeman.
Performances
On May 31, 1997, in Mexico City, Miguel
Salazar and the Xalapa Symphony Orchestra, under Jorge
Mester, presented Music for Oboe and Orchestra.
Joseba Torre conducted the National Youth Orchestra
of France in Alegrias, in Murcia and Aguilar,
Spain, Apr. 17-18, 1997. At the Encontre de Compositors
festival in Palma de Mallorca, the following works were
performed: Homage to Casals, by the Balears Symphony
Orchestra; Diary of Dreams, for piano trio; Three
Transparencies of a Bach's Prelude, for cello and
piano; and Preludis Obstinants and Transparency
of Chopin's First Ballade, both for piano, Sept.
18-19, 1997. The Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic, conducted
by J. P. Izquierdo, played Auroris in Pittsburgh,
Sept. 19, 1997.
