Annual American Composers Update
Michael Mauldin
Michael Mauldin lives and works in
Albuquerque, NM, where he teaches piano and composition,
and directs the Albuquerque Boy Choir, three choirs
of boys between the ages of 8 and 16.
Premieres
On Apr. 20, 25, and 27, 1997, the
Santa Fe Women's Ensemble introduced We Are One
(text by Penny Raife Durant, commissioned by the ensemble),
for SSAA choir and two flutes, with flutists Charly
Drobeck and Nancy Laupheimer and director Linda Raney,
in Santa Fe's Loretto Chapel. On July 6, 1997, the
St. Paul Lutheran Church Chancel Choir, led by Bradley
Ellingboe, gave the first performance of Simple
Gifts (SATB version), in Albuquerque. A Child's
Fantasy on "Revecy", for SAA choir and piano,
was premiered by the Albuquerque Boy Choir with the
composer conducting, Apr. 8, 1997, at the University
of New Mexico Music Department's 1997 Composer's Symposium.
Performances
The Albuquerque Boy Choir, led by
Mauldin, sang Simple Gifts (SA/piano version)
and O Gracious Light, for SSAT choir and piano.
On June 1, 1997, they performed the same works on
tour at The First Presbyterian Church, Seattle. In
1997 the Sangre de Cristo Chorale, directed by Sheldon
Kalberg and accompanied by Cindy Little, presented
Introduction of the Child to the Cosmos, for
SATB choir and piano at Immanuel Presybterian Church,
in Albuquerque (May 4) and in both Santa Fe and Los
Alamos (May 5). Mauldin's arrangement for children
and orchestra of Bist du Bei Mir and his orchestral
work Dawn at San Juan Mesa were heard with
the Albuquerque Girl Choir and the Symphony Orchestra
of Albuquerque, led by Mauldin, at Heights Presbyterian
Church in Albuquerque, Sept. 21, 1997.
