Annual American Composers Update
Samuel Magrill
Samuel Magrill serves as Associate Professor of Music
and Composer-in-Residence at the University of Central
Oklahoma (UCO), in Edmond. In 1997-98, he received his
tenth consecutive ASACP Award, a UCO faculty research
grant, and a UCO Faculty Merit-Credit Award for his work
in composition. In addition the UCO Research Advisory
Council voted him the 1997 Hauptman Research Fellow for
the College of Liberal Arts.
Premieres
Premieres heard in 1997 at UCO included
A Suite of
Bagatelles (1996), for half-track stereo tape (Jan.
29, July 11, and Sept. 3); and
Festive Fanfare
(1997), at a Wind Ensemble Concert directed by Ron Howell
(May 1). 1997 "Magrill to the Max" programs at UCO (July
11, Sept. 10, Sept. 19, and Nov. 24) included the first
performances of
Hong's Song (1997), for solo violin,
with Hong Zhu; and
Swans in the Blue (1997), with
Earl Hefley, flute; Howell, clarinet; and Magrill, piano.
Performances

Story (1973), for half-track
stereo tape, realized in the Oberlin (OH) Conservatory
Electronic Music Studios;
Vignettes (1991, poems
by Donald E. Hines), eight songs for soprano and piano
commissioned by the Oklahoma Music Teachers' Association
and the Music Teachers National Association, with Pamela
Richman, soprano and Magrill, piano; and
Piano Pieces
(1979), with the composer at the piano. A Music from Manuscript
concert at the
Society
of Composers, Inc. Regional Conference held at Oklahoma
Baptist University, in Shawnee, included

(1996, poem by Christina Rossetti), with the UCO Concert
Chorale, Magrill, piano, Lon Dehnert, conductor; and

the One (1995), with the UCO Concert Chorale, Adante
Harvey, viola; Dehnert, conductor, Feb. 21, 1997. Chayong
Lee, Amy Faires, Kristina Cook, Roderick Branch, and Alex
Fokkens played
Interpolations (1995), for string
quintet, at a regional
College
Music Society Meeting held at Texas Christian University,
Fort Worth, TX, Feb. 28, 1997. On Apr. 4, 1997, "Time
Dialation," from
A Suite of Bagatelles (1996),
for half-track stereo tape, was heard at the
Society
for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States national
meeting, held at the University of Missouri at Kansas
City. Magrill presented
Piano Pieces at an Oklahoma
City Pianists' Club meeting, Oct. 7, 1997.
