Annual American Composers Update
Cynthia Folio
SAI National Arts Associate Cynthia Folio, Associate Professor
of music at Temple University, in Philadelphia, has made
guest appearances at the Virginia Center for the Creative
Arts (3 weeks in Feb. 1998); as composer and flutist at
the Kerry Walker high school flute camp's Julius Baker
master class, Danbury, CT (July 28-Aug. 1, 1997); as composer/theorist
at the University of New Mexico Composers' Symposium (Apr.
6-9, 1997); and as lecturer on analysis and performance
at Cincinnatti-Conservatory (Nov. 22, 1996). In June 1997,
she received her fifth consecutive ASCAP Standard Award;
and in May 1996, she won the Lindback Award for Distinguished
Teaching. The Society for Music Theory elected her Treasurer
and Board Member for 1994-98. Girard College commissioned
her to write a piece for organ, band, and heraldic trumpets
to celebrate its 150th anniversary. Commissioned by the
National Flute Association (NFA),
Arca Sacra, for
solo flute, has been accepted by
Hildegard
Publishing Co. for an anthology of 20th-century flute
music.
Premieres
At the NFA Convention, Aug. 14, 1997 in Chicago, Folio
presented
Arca Sacra and then repeated the work
at their next convention, held Aug. 5, 1998 in Phoenix,
AZ. The Network for New Music and Hildegard Chamber Players
celebrated the 900th birthday of Hildegard von Bingen
by commissioning and premiering
Through Window's Lattices,
for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and percussion,
at Bryn Mawr (PA) Coll. (Sept. 27) and at the Academy
of Vocal Arts, in Philadelphia (Oct. 2).
Four 'Scapes,
consisting of "Cityscape", "Landscape", "Seascape", and
"Escape", for flute quartet, is scheduled to be heard
first at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair, Feb. 20-21, 1999
in Bethesda, MD, with the Kirkwood Flute Ensemble, the
group that commissioned it with a grant from the Brannen
Cooper Fund.
Performances
Touch the Angel's Hand, for choir and organ, will
have 1998 performances by the Temple University Concert
Choir, Alan Harler, director, at Temple University (Sept.
28) and at Trinity Memorial Episcopal Church (Oct. 4),
both in Philadelphia.
Living Legacy, for band and
organ, was on the program of the Society for Composers,
Inc. Regional Conference in Newport News, VA, Oct. 30-Nov.

Desert
Winds also received a performance at Swarthmore College,
Michael Johns, conductor, Apr. 5, 1997.
Trio for Flute,
Cello, and Piano was played by the Sierra Trio at
the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Oct. 6 and Nov.
12, 1996, and at the University of New Mexico, Apr. 8,
1997.
One for Four, for flute quartet, was presented
by the Stanford University Flute Ensemble, directed by
Karen Van Dyke, Dec. 7, 1996, and also at the University
of New Mexico.
