Annual American Composers Update
David Liptak
David Liptak lives in Rochester, NY, where he serves as
Professor of Composition and Chair of the Composition
Department at the Eastman School of Music. He was Composer-in-Residence
for the 1998 Brevard (NC) Music Festival.
Premieres
On July 12, 1998, the Brevard Music Center Resident Opera
Workshop, John Greer, conductor and musical director,
and Jonathan Field, stage director, premiered
The Moon
Singer, an opera for young audiences.
Performances
Northern Light had 1998 performances with the Rochester
Philharmonic Orchestra, under Christopher Seaman (Oct.
1 and 3); and with the Rochester Youth Philharmonic Orchestra,
under David Harman, in Rochester (Mar. 22) and during
their spring tour of Germany, including Nurenberg (Apr.
14), Ilmenau (Apr. 16), and Sondershausen (Apr. 17). In
1998,
Giovine vagha, 'i non senti, for violin,
cello, flute, clarinet, marimba, and piano, was played
at the Aspen Music Festival (July 7), and at the Musikhochschule
in Frieberg, Germany (Feb. 13). Zorica Stanojevie and
Ben Toth presented
Shadower, for violin and percussion,
Apr. 8, 1998 in Novi Sad, Croatia. An Eastman School of
Music program included
Duo, with violist John Graham
and pianist Barry Snyder, Feb. 21, 1998. During the 1998
Brevard Music Festival, Jamie Hafner led the Brevard wind
ensemble in
The Sacred Harp (July 21); and David
Effron conducted the Brevard Music Center Festival Orchestra
in
Loner (Aug. 2).
