Annual American Composers Update

Ellen Taaffe Zwilich

Ellen Taaffe Zwilich is in her fourth year as holder of the first Carnegie Hall Composer's Chair, during which time she has written three works on commission from Carnegie Hall: Peanuts Gallery (based on Charles Schulz characters), for young pianist and orchestra; a Violin Concerto; and String Quartet No. 2. She has also designed and hosted Carnegie Hall's award-winning series "Making Music", now in its third season. In Apr., Carnegie Hall will host the Ellen Taaffe Zwilich Composers' Workshop, featuring a concert of four young composers specially commissioned for this event by Carnegie Hall. Zwilich also has begun a video archive of composer interviews filmed at Carnegie Hall.

Premieres

The Emerson String Quartet introduced String Quartet No. 2 at Carnegie Hall.

Performances

In Paris, France, Pamela Frank and the Orchestre de Paris, under Christoph von Dohnanyi, presented the Zwilich Violin Concerto, Oct. 14-17, 1998. John Nelson conducted the Cologne (Germany) Philharmonie in Prologue and Variations, Dec. 6-8, 1998. A Louisville (KY) Orchestra program, conducted by Uriel Siegel, featured the Kalichstein/Laredo/Robinson Trio in Triple Concerto, Jan. 28-29, 1999. In 1999, pianists K. and M. Lebeque and the National Symphony Orchestra, under Leonard Slatkin, will perform Images in Washington, DC (Mar. 13-15) and at Carnegie Hall (Mar. 23). The Gala opening of the Trenton, NJ War Memorial Auditorium will feature Celebration, with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Zdenek Macal conducting, Mar. 10, 1999.
