Annual American Composers Update

Howard J. Buss

Howard J. Buss lives in Lakeland, FL, where he serves as editor of Brixton Publications (ASCAP) and of Buss Publications (BMI). His recent commissions include Into Each Life, from the Florida Flute Association, the Branner-Cooper Fund, Barbara Jacobsen, and Deborah Heller, as a tribute to the late Albert Tipton; and Sky Blossoms, for flute and percussion, from G. B. Lane for Connie and Brandie Lane. In recognition of significant performances in non-commercial media, Buss received a 1998-99 ASCAP award.

Premieres

The Florida Flute Association State Convention, held in Tampa, featured the premiere of Into Each Life, with Kim McCormick, flute; Lowell Adams, cello; Corey Holt, piano; and Robert McCormick, percussion, Jan. 31, 1998. During the International Trombone Festival, at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Paul Hunt, trombone, and Roger Schupp, percussion, presented Boom Time, May 28, 1998. In 1998, Postcards from Vienna, for clarinet and piano, was introduced by Kathleen Gardiner and Gail Novak at The Ohio State University, in Columbus, as part of the International Clarinet Society's Clarinetfest '98 (July 12); and was heard again with Jonathan Cohler and Cheng Wei at the Beijing (China) International Clarinet Festival.

Performances

Wave Train, for flute and marimba, was performed by the McCormick Duo, Jan. 18, 1998 at the Pasco County Library in Hudson, FL; and Jan. 25, 1998 at the Arts on the Park Gallery in Lakeland, FL. On Mar. 29, 1998 at Temple (TX) Coll., Robb Belcher and Steve Crawford played Night Tide, for trombone and marimba. Escapade, for alto saxophone and percussion ensemble was heard with Barry McGinnis and percussionists Susan Powell, Fred Selvaggio, Scott Herring, and Jeff Smith, conducted by John Boyd, Mar. 27, 1998 at the North American Saxophone Conference, hosted by Northwestern University, in Evanston, IL. Patrick J. Cotter presented Camel Music, for solo trombone, Apr. 23, 1998 at the University of Miami (FL). A Wilfrid Laurier University program recorded by the CBC for later broadcast featured The Canadian Chamber Ensemble Brass Quintet in Sonic Fables: Lessons from Aesop, for brass quintet and percussion, Apr. 28, 1998 in Waterloo, Ontario.
