Annual American Composers Update
Jack Beeson
Jack Beeson, who has homes in New
York, NY and Lloyd Neck (Long Island), NY, serves as a
board member of several music organizations. Columbia
University has included his chapter, largely concerned
with American composers, in its book
A Century of Arts
and Letters. In spring 1999, premieres are expected
of two recently completed stage works:
Sorry, Wrong
Number, a conversational chamber opera in one act,
and
Practice in the Art of Elocution, an operina.
Premieres
On Aug. 7-8, 1998, a Museum of Modern Art Summergarden
program introduced
Four Forbidden Songs, with soprano
Lauren Skuce and pianist Joel Sachs.
Performances
Lizzie Borden is scheduled for six performances
in March 1999 by the New York City Opera, conducted by
George Manahan, featuring Phyllis Pancella as Lizzie,
Lauren Flanigan as her stepmother, with direction, sets,
and costumes from the 1996 Glimmerglass Opera production.
