Annual American Composers Update
Libby Larsen
SAI Honorary Member Libby Larsen, who makes her
home in Minneapolis, MN, works in various locations, both
nationally and internationally. In 1997, she was composer-in-residence
with the Colorado Symphony and participated in a Center
for Contemporary Opera panel in New York, NY (Nov. 11)
and a Women's Philharmonic Symposium in San Francisco
(Nov. 13-17).
Premieres
Opera Omaha, conducted by Hal France, gave the first production
of
Eric Hermannson's Soul, an opera in two acts,
Nov. 11-12, 1998 in Omaha. Recent Minnesota Orchestra
premieres, Eiji Oue, conductor, are
String Symphony
(Dec. 3, 1998) and
Science of Sound (Mar. 22-28,
1999). On Apr. 17, 1998, Benita Valente and the Network
for New Music Ensemble introduced
Songs of Light and
Love. On May 7-8, 1999, the South Bend Chamber Singers
and the Chester String Quartet are due to present
To
a Long Loved Love. On Feb. 8, 1998, the Des Moines
Symphony premiered
Fanfare. Heard first with the
Colorado Symphony and Colorado Children's Chorus was
Ragtime
Kid, Jan. 1998. 1997 premieres included
A Spell
on me that Holy Hour: Overture to Tsvetaeva, with
the American Soviet Youth Orchestra, under Leon Botstein,
at Carnegie Hall;
Fanfare for Eiji, Oue conducting,
at the Grand Teton Festival;
Holy Roller, with
saxophonist Paul Bro, in Valencia, Spain; and
Love
Songs, with Winchester Musica Viva.
Performances
In 1997, The Kings Singers performed
Billy the Kid
in Lawrence, KS and Birmingham, England. On Oct. 14, 1997,
the Portland Symphony played
Ring of Fire.
