Annual American Composers Update
Margaret Brouwer
Margaret Brouwer, of suburban Cleveland, OH, is the head
of the composition department and the Vincent K. and Edith
H. Smith Chair in Composition at The Cleveland Institute
of Music. On Feb. 9, 1998, her
Symphony No. 1 aired
nationally on NPR's "Performance Today" program.
Premieres
Recent premieres include
Symphony No. 1 (Lake Voices),
by the Akron Symphony, Oct. 1997;
Pluto, (a Sequel),
by the Roanoke Symphony, Mar. 1997; and
Celebration,
by the Institute Brass Quintet for the 250th anniversary
of Washington and Lee University, Sept. 8, 1998. In June
1997, the Audubon String Quartet presented
Demeter
Prelude, and then played it on their 1998 tour (June-Oct.).
Performances
In 1998,
Skyriding was performed by the League
of Composers at Merkin Hall, New York, NY (May 13); and
by Cleveland Orchestra members at a Cleveland Composers
Guild concert at the Cleveland Art Museum (June 24). Boston's
Dinosaur Annex presented Brouwer's
Chamber Concerto,
Mar. 22, 1998. On Oct. 16, 1998, the Bowling Green University
Annual New Music Festival included
Two Pieces for Viola.
Diary of an Alien was heard with Continuum, Mar.
3, 1997, and on the National Musical Arts concert held
at the National Academy of Sciences, Washington, DC, Oct.
25, 1998. Richard Stolzman and the Roanoke Symphony played
the composer's
Clarinet Concerto, Jan. 1997.
