Annual American Composers Update
Raymond Songayllo
From his home base of Indianola, IA,
Raymond Songayllo works independently in the Des Moines,
IA area as a pianist, composer, adjudicator, and music
critic. His 1998 piano performances have occurred at
the St. Paul's Cathedral "Mostly Mozart Series", in
Des Moines, aired over radio station WOI-FM (May 14);
at St. John's Lutheran, in Des Moines (Oct. 8); at Union
University, Jackson, TN (Mar. 2), followed by a master
class the following day; and in chamber music at the
Dartington (England) International Summer School (Aug.
8-22).
Premieres
The Iowa Composers' Festival, held Feb.
20 at Luther College, Decorah, IA, featured the premiere
of Three Songs (texts by Dickinson, Frost, and
Teasdale) with tenor Edward Andereck and pianist Tim
Smith. At the Hoyt Sherman Place Auditorium, the Des
Moines Community Orchestra, under Richard Gerstenberger,
introduced Variations on a Folk Song, Mar. 1.
An Ancient Carol, for SATB choir with organ or
piano four-hands, was heard first at the Iowa Composers'
Forum Showcase Festival, Oct. 24, 1998 at Drake University,
in Des Moines, with the Drake University Choir.
