Annual American Composers Update

Sydney Hodkinson

Sydney Hodkinson is Professor of Composition at the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY. He conducted Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat in a concert production with the Eastman Virtuosi in Oct. 1997 during the triennial Alumni Reunion. This past summer, he taught composition and conducted several programs at the Aspen (CO) Music Festival.

Premieres

Oleh Krysa presented Branches, a sonata for solo violin, Jan. 21, 1998 in Rochester. In 1998, Hit and Run, for harp and percussion, was heard first at SUNY College at Geneseo (Apr. 5), with Grace Wong and Jim Tiller, and then repeated by the same performers in Rochester (July 11). At the Aspen Music Festival, Katherine Thomas and the Contemporary Music Ensemble, conducted by the composer, premiered Summerwood, a concertino for harp and chamber quintet, July 7, 1998.

Performances

: The Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, conducted by G. Bernstein, performed Overture: A Little Travelin' Music, July 2, 1998 in Boulder. On Jan. 23, 1998, an Eastman Musica Nova Ensemble program included Nuevas Canciones, Book I, for low voice, string quartet, French horn, and percussion, with Bradley Ludman, conductor, and Thomas Paul, baritone-bass. Chris Hutton, Hansjorg Koch, and Yasuko Miyamoto played Two Poems, for cello, piano, and optional percussion, in Rochester (Oct. 1997) and at the Hochscule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany, with a recording by the Southwest German Radio (Feb. 1998). Heard at the University of Akron (OH) Percussion Festival, Mar. 1-2, 1998, were Limb, for marimba, and Kerberos, for snare drum.
