Annual American Composers Update
Samuel Jones
Samuel Jones lives in the Seattle area, where he has been
reappointed as Composer in Residence for the Seattle Symphony
Orchestra. In July 1998, he served on the faculty both
as conducting teacher and composer at the Conductors Institute,
Columbia, SC. His 1998-99 guest conducting appearances
are with the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic, in Pittsburgh
(Feb. and Apr. 1999); and with The Southern Orchestra,
in Hattiesburg, MS (Sept. 1998).
Premieres
The Seattle Symphony, under Gerard Schwarz, premiered
Janus, written for the opening of the orchestra's
new concert hall, Sept. 16, 1998.
Performances
Also heard with the Seattle Symphony, under Schwarz, was
Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, Oct. 1 and 3, 1998.
Gregory Isaacs conducted the Cascade Symphony in
Fanfare
and Celebration, Oct. 26, 1998 in Edmonds, WA. The
Southern Orchestra, conducted by the composer, played
Symphony No. 3 ("Palo Duro Canyon"), Sept. 24,
1998 in Hattiesburg, MI. On Mar. 13, 1999, the Bremerton
(WA) Symphony, conducted by Adrian Gnam, is scheduled
to present
Overture for a City, Mar. 13, 1999.
The Northwest Symphony, led by Anthony Spain, will perform
